What is Compounding?
Health professionals are compounding when they prepare a specialized drug product to fill an individual patient’s prescription when an approved drug can’t fill the bill. For example, perhaps you cannot swallow pills. Dougherty’s Pharmacy can compound your medication into a liquid, a nasal spray or some other form. Why Compounding?
There are several reasons to consider compound prescription medications, but the most important one is patient consideration. Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. With a physician’s prescription, Dougherty’s Pharmacy can change the strength of a medication, alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, and add flavor to it to make it more palatable. At Dougherty’s Pharmacy, we can also prepare medication using several unique delivery systems, such as a lozenge, a lollipop, or a gel.

Parents often have a tough time getting their children to take their medicine because of the taste. A compounding pharmacist can work directly with the physician and the patient to select a flavoring agent, such as vanilla or even “"tutti frutti".
