Top 10 Sun Protection Tips

Here are ten good-to-know sun protection tips for you and your family

1. Even though all skin tones are susceptible to sunburn, extra care should be taken with those who have 1) pale skin, 2) blond, red or light brown hair, 3) pale eyes or 4) have been treated for skin cancer or a family member who's had skin cancer.

2. Apply sunscreen to children older than 6 months every time they go out in the sun, and reapply every 2 hours. (Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using sunscreen on children under 6 months.)

3. Learn “The Shadow Rule": When your shadow is shorter than you are, UV rays are at their strongest! Remember to limit your time outside between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

4. It’s not just the water!Snow and sand also reflect damaging UV rays, increasing the risk of sunburn and can cause eye damage any time of the year.Make sure your sunglasses have 100% UV protection.(Kids sunglasses too!)

5. It’s not just sunny days! Up to 80% of UV rays can filter through the clouds on overcast days as well.

6. Car windshields do not block damaging UVA rays. These rays can cause age spots and wrinkles.

7. Even artificial UV rays, such as tanning beds, can cause sunburn and skin aging! Limit your exposure to artificial sunlamps.

8. Examine your skin and children's skin once a month. See a dermatologist if you detect any new or changing skin lesion. Unusual moles, scaly patches and sores that do not heal may be pre-cancer.

9. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications (oral and topical) can cause drug-induced photo-sensitivity. This interaction with UV rays causes inflammation and damages skin cells, resulting in burning pain and redness to the skin, resembling sunburn. Make sure to read the labels on your medications and discuss the risks with your pharmacist or doctor.

10. Make sun protection part of your DAILY routine. It's not just for summer!

Remember to play it safe! Protect your skin and have fun in the sun.
