Treating the Common Cold and Seasonal Allergies

Throughout the year patients end up in their pharmacy or doctor’s office trying to determine what it is ailing them. When a patient comes into the pharmacy complaining of itchy eyes, runny nose, and nasal congestion the diagnosis can often be narrowed down to two prime suspects: the common cold or seasonal allergies.

A cold and seasonal allergies both present similar symptoms. However, there are a few differences that can determine the proper treatment and hasten a patient’s path to fit and healthy.

First, it’s important to know what causes the common cold and seasonal allergies. The common cold is a bacterial or viral infection. The body uses its natural defense, the immune system, to fight off the infection which can result in various symptoms. A number of these symptoms overlap with the same symptoms experienced by someone suffering seasonal allergies. Perhaps the most important piece of advice, proper hand washing can help deter the spread of the common cold to coworkers, friends, and family.

The common cold typically lasts between a few days and a couple weeks. As with any infection the immune response creates a certain set of symptoms:
  • Aches/Pains
  • Cough
  • Possible Fever

Seasonal allergies are slightly different; the body might have a bit of a reaction when it comes into contact with allergens like ragweed or pollen. The symptoms appear similar to the symptoms of the common cold, characterized by:

  • Itchy Eyes
  • Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffed Up Nose

Treatment for either of these issues is similar with a few exceptions. Antihistamines (such as Claritin® or Allegra®) are useful tools when the nose is dripping like a faucet. Additionally, Sudafed® (pseudoephedrine) can help when the nose is so stuffy breathing through the nose is labored or impossible. These medications can treat the similar symptoms of the common cold and seasonal allergies.

Individuals that have the cough, aches/pains, or fever previously mentioned might find relief with an over-the-counter fever reducer such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or a cough medication such as Mucinex (guaifenesin).

Having the symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes, or a cough can give even the most cheerful person have a bad day.
