Understanding Medicare and Your DME pt 2: Assignment vs. Non-Assignment

Understanding Medicare and Your DME pt 2: Assignment vs. Non-Assignment
So now that you know the difference in Medicare Part A and B, it’s time to go a step further and distinguish the difference between assignment and non-assignment. Take note, this only applies to Part B Medicare, because the patient is responsible for locating and purchasing equipment on their own and not through a long-term care facility.

When going to a durable medical equipment provider, it’s important to know whether or not the provider accepts assignment. Assignment means the provider will take Medicare directly, which eliminates your out-of-pocket cost. As long as your deductible is paid, are only obligated to pay your 20% copay required by Medicare. All other costs should be covered by your Medicare plan. Dougherty’s accepts “non-assignment” claims.

Non-assignment requires 100% up-front cost to be paid out of pocket by the patient. After a full payment is made by the patient paperwork is then submitted to Medicare and processed as a reimbursement claim. Filing non-assigned claims is a complimentary service we offer at Dougherty’s Home Medical Equipment Department. We are happy to answer your questions regarding the difference in Medicare assignment and non-assignment.

There are a few requirements that must be met before we file non-assignment paperwork:

• Prescription from your doctor stating medical necessity and diagnosis
• Original Medicare card (the one with the red, white, and blue along the top)
• Valid drivers license or picture ID
• Acceptable form of payment (cash, credit, or check)

Once you have the doctor’s prescription call us at 214-373-5302 before visiting, just to ensure we carry the product and we are able to file your non-assignment claim. There is some equipment we cannot file. Equipment not eligible for filing will be detailed in a later entry.

Keep checking back, there is still plenty more to come about Medicare and about our HME products and services. Should you still have any questions or concerns about Medicare and how it is handled at Dougherty’s, call (214-373-5302) or send me an email at hmcmurray@dougehrtys.com.
