History Dougherty's Pharmacy has been your neighborhood pharmacy for over 75 years.
Our long history began in 1929 when Bill Dougherty moved to Dallas from Brownwood, Texas at the beginning of the Great Depression to open a new pharmacy in Oak Cliff, then a working-class neighborhood in South Dallas. Early on, Mr. Dougherty set the tone for a customer-oriented pharmacy, emphasizing his customer’s well-being was more important than price. The small store flourished thanks to its focus on the customer as well as its prime location between Safeway and A&P Grocery stores, retail giants at the time. One fateful day during the Depression, Dougherty’s even attracted the infamous characters, Bonnie & Clyde, who unsuccessfully attempted to rob the pharmacy. An armed Bill Dougherty foiled their plot and sent them running!
In 1941, Mr. Dougherty added to his staff by hiring a new pharmacist, George B. Park. The pharmacy continued to grow in both size and reputation. In the era following the Great Depression and around World War II, pharmacies were a place where customers did more than just fill prescriptions or consult their pharmacist; they lingered over the soda fountain and visited with their friends and neighbors. Over time, the residents of Oak Cliff began to trust the values inherent in the Dougherty’s name and Dougherty’s Pharmacy became a well-known neighborhood icon. In 1943, Mr. Park and a partner who specialized in soda fountains purchased the pharmacy from Bill Dougherty. The new owners decided against changing the name of the business because they felt it might jeopardize the $300 in accounts receivable then outstanding.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the Dougherty’s business expanded, and in 1959 it hired Joe B. Park, Mr. Park’s son, a new pharmacist fresh out of pharmacy school. In 1967, the Park family relocated Dougherty’s Pharmacy to Preston Royal Village, a new shopping center located at the far northwest corner of Preston Road and Royal Lane - an area considered to be “"Far North Dallas" at the time. By moving approximately 12 miles north into the “"country", Dougherty’s was able to attract a new clientele in a growing part of the city. During the 1980s, Dougherty’s began to grow its compounding prescription business, building upon its customer-oriented service model. Today, Dougherty’s Pharmacy is one of Dallas’ oldest, largest and best-known full service pharmacies. The neighborhood has changed, many of the families are new, but Dougherty’s still remains committed to customer-oriented service – an approach rarely duplicated by conventional, big-box pharmacies of the modern era. From carry out to home delivery, Dougherty’s stands ready to provide you with the solutions you need. |
